Kismayo Airport Somalia

This photo was taken at the Kismayo Airport which is in southern Somalia. We convoyed down there to do patrols in that area. The drive down from Baledogle was about 14+ hours. I did it multiple times without having anyone else drive and it is one of the major reasons I earned a driver’s badge which is a rare award for an Infantryman to earn.

On the way down the convoy briefly stopped at the equator so that we could all take note of the zero on our GPS’s.

Here is the route in Google Maps.

While changing a tire on my HUMVEE in Kismayo I met Clint Black. At the time I didn’t even know who he was but he was a nice enough guy.

  1. Dear sir,

Do you by chance have any other photos from Kismayo airport during your time out there? I’m specifically looking for photos of an old jet aircraft wreck that was located off the main apron at the north east corner of the airport. It was to the left of the main terminal building in your photo. It was photographed in 1993, so I know it was there then and possibly a few more years later.

    1. I do not have any photos of the plane you are looking for. I did not spend much time in Kismayo. Most of my time was at the Bale Dogle airbase much to the north. Sorry, I can’t help you.
